How do you distribute water in a city? Urban water supply has several models which are in use worldwide. Basically the supply can be managed through a private company, or through an autonomous water board or directly from the municipality. In rural areas, it can also be through a cooperative arrangement (paani panchayat).

In India, there is no city which has officially privatised water distribution, although many cities have private companies distributing electricity. However in many cities like Mumbai there is de facto privatisation.
